Matcha shops in Tokyo
2 shops serving modern matcha sweets in Aoyama.

Matsubaya Saryō / Hakobune Gallery
AoyamaOmotesando Station6 min
A dark, easily missed frontage on a Minami-Aoyama side street hides a tearoom built around bonsai and cedar. Behind the noren, candle lanterns throw root-like shadows across concrete walls, warmed tea leaves smoulder in a chakouro, and the room runs quiet enough that the street disappears. The menu is short and tea-first: matcha and sencha in the morning, hojicha latte later, sake in the evening, with the matcha latte the drink most visitors come for. A counter at the back offers a tea-ceremony seating for a per-person charge. Reservations can be made through the shop's own site.

Sakurai Japanese Tea Experience
AoyamaOmotesando Station3 min
On the fifth floor of the Spiral building, Shinya Sakurai's tea laboratory pairs a retail counter with a ten-seat tea salon designed by Shinichiro Ogata. Staff in white coats work like technicians, roasting hojicha in-house and building multi-course tea flights that move through gyokuro, seasonal blends and a bowl of thin matcha with wagashi. Courses start around 4,800 yen; a bar menu of tea-based cocktails runs later on weekdays. Monthly tasting seminars cover single themes, matcha among them. Reservations through TableCheck are advisable given the counter's size, and the room is unusually quiet for central Aoyama.
